Birth Trauma Counselling
Gentle, paced support to process a birth that left you shaken, frightened, or grieving — whenever you are ready to talk about it.
No referral · No diagnosis · Usually within the week
A birth that left you shaken is not something you should have to talk yourself out of. Birth trauma is far more common than most people realise, and it does not only follow the births that look dramatic from the outside. It can follow an emergency caesarean or a long, frightening labour — but it can just as easily follow a birth where everything “went fine” on paper, and you were left feeling unheard, out of control, or unsafe.
A healthy baby is not the whole story. You were there too, and what happened to you matters. If you find yourself replaying the birth, avoiding reminders of it, bracing at medical appointments, or quietly grieving the birth you had hoped for, that is reason enough to seek support.
Safe Refuge is one of very few counselling practices in the Adelaide Hills with an explicit perinatal focus. Aana is herself a mother of young children, and the work is deliberately paced and trauma-informed: you tell the story at your own speed, in your own words, and you stay in control of how far each session goes.
There is no crisis threshold to meet and no diagnosis required. Whether your baby arrived three months ago or your youngest is in school, it is not too late — and not too small a thing — to bring to counselling.

Our Approach
Why Safe Refuge
Specialised support after a difficult birth is hard to find in the Hills. The nearest perinatal psychologist is often months away on a waiting list, and many women are told — directly or by implication — to be grateful and move on. At Safe Refuge we can usually offer you an appointment within the week.
Babies are welcome in the room. We can see you during nap time, in person in Mount Barker or online from home. And because this is counselling rather than a medical pathway, there is no referral, no diagnosis on your record, and no pressure to relive anything before you are ready.
