About Safe Refuge

Aana Carpenter, Lead Therapist at Safe Refuge

Our Mission

Safe Refuge exists to provide trauma-informed counselling for women in Mount Barker and the Adelaide Hills. We recognise that many women carry the effects of past trauma, family breakdown, loneliness, and a loss of purpose — often in silence, often for years.

We believe that genuine healing goes beyond managing symptoms. Our holistic approach honours the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — because lasting recovery requires more than a “freedom from” pain. It calls for a “freedom for” a life of authentic connection, meaning, and flourishing.

Our Approach

Our trauma-informed practice is grounded in the understanding that every person has inherent dignity and the capacity for healing. We create a safe, compassionate space where women can process old wounds, challenge the patterns that keep them stuck, and develop the confidence and resilience needed to re-engage with life fully.

Informed by faith and guided by evidence-based practice, our counselling addresses the real challenges women face today: the isolation that comes from a hyper-connected yet disconnected world, the instability of family breakdown, the quiet despair of feeling purposeless, and the long shadow of unresolved trauma.
